Soul singer Isaac Hayes is considered a forerunner of rap and hip-hop with his chanting. His songs have been sampled many times (including by Portishead, Jay-Z, Beyoncé feat. The Weeknd). His worldwide breakthrough came in 1971 with the title song for the blaxploitation film "Shaft". The groundbreaking singer died of a stroke at his home in Memphis in 2008 at the age of 65. He left behind some of the most influential soul albums, which have now finally been re-released. "Hot Buttered Soul" is an absolute recommendation!
