El Michels Affair - Return To The 37th Chamber (LP)

This time, El Michels Affair have not only reinterpreted Wu-Tang compositions as live music, but also specifically paid tribute to the noisy and foggy productions of Wu-Tang boss The RZA, with which the clan became known. Producer and band leader Leon Michels recorded the album completely analog and overdubbed the tape six times before mixing it. This resulted in the idiosyncratic, dusky sound of "Return To The 37th Chamber". What it lacks in raps, it makes up for in psychedelic embellishments, synths like something out of a John Carpenter movie, heavy metal guitars, proud horns and traditional Chinese instruments. From the first note to the last, the album is a dark journey, driven as resolutely by RZA's timeless hip-hop aesthetic as it is by the cinematic soul for which El Michels Affair is known. Killer!
